Espresso Martini, but Make It Morning

Espresso Martini, but Make It Morning

There is a particular kind of ambition in ordering something that tastes like coffee and cocktail at the same time. An espresso martini always feels a little theatrical to me: glossy, dark, slightly bitter, arriving with that soft layer of foam on top as if the evening has dressed itself properly.

Maybe that is why the idea lingers long after the glass is gone. Not because Oslo mornings are asking for vodka, clearly, but because the combination itself says something about how we live now. We want energy, but also pleasure. We want ritual without too much heaviness. Something sharp enough to wake us up and smooth enough to enjoy.

That same logic shows up in brunch more often than people admit. You see it in the first sip of a flat white on a cold street off Grünerløkka, and in the moment a plate lands in front of you that manages to feel both clean and generous. At KUMI, it might be poached eggs over toasted sourdough with greens that still have a little bite, or a warm dish with roasted vegetables, herbs, and something creamy tucked underneath. The appeal is similar to an espresso martini, just redirected toward daylight: depth, contrast, a little lift.

Food in Oslo often works best when it understands the weather. For much of the year, we are moving through grey light, damp pavements, scarves that never quite dry by the radiator. So a good brunch does more than feed you. It changes the texture of the day. Bitterness becomes balance. Warmth becomes mood.

What I think people really like about an espresso martini is not the novelty of it, but the permission it gives. To mix categories. To let one thing be two things at once. Breakfast can do that too. A weekday can feel indulgent. A café can be both shelter and reset.

By eleven, when the windows at KUMI catch whatever light is available and the room smells faintly of coffee and baked bread, that feels like enough. Not a night out, not a grand plan. Just a better middle ground, which is often what we are hungry for anyway.
