Brunch, Somewhere Between Morning and the Rest of the Day

Brunch, Somewhere Between Morning and the Rest of the Day

There is a particular kind of hunger that shows up around eleven in Oslo. Not the sharp, rushed kind that sends you toward a quick pastry on the go, and not quite lunch either. It arrives after the day has already begun: after the tram ride, after a walk through damp sidewalks in Grünerløkka, after answering one email too many on a Saturday you promised yourself would feel easier.

That, to me, is where brunch earns its place.

Brunch is not really about excess, even if people like to treat it that way. More often, it feels like a correction. A plate of something warm, something green, something with enough substance to make you feel returned to yourself. Eggs get most of the attention in the usual version, but the vegetarian table has its own quiet logic. Good sourdough, a bowl of yogurt with sharp berries, roasted vegetables still sweet from the oven, maybe a toast with avocado and herbs that smells faintly of lemon when it reaches the table.

At KUMI, brunch fits into the room almost without announcement. You notice it in the way people settle in after the morning rush has passed, coats folded over chairs, cheeks still pink from the cold outside. There might be a turmeric-colored plate set down beside a flat white, or pancakes arriving with fruit that actually tastes of fruit. The food feels bright but steadying, which is harder to do than it sounds.

What I like about brunch is that it allows for a softer kind of gathering. Friends meet there before the day splits off in different directions. Someone comes alone with a book and ends up simply watching the window for a while. It makes space for appetite, but also for mood.

And maybe that is why it keeps its appeal. Not because it is indulgent, but because it sits in that useful gap between obligation and pleasure. In a city where the light changes quickly and plans often do too, brunch can be the meal that restores a little balance before the afternoon begins.
